Submarine Scorpion Down

The Andrea Doria has played a major role in aiding maritime science ever since its demise on July 26, 1956

. I recently received this message from a friend, librarian Lucille Rosa, at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.

“I’ve been listening to “Scorpion Down”, an audio book about the sinking for

the Submarine “Scorpion”.  In it, they describe a system that listened to

and recorded ocean sounds made by ships in order to be able to identify them

by sound.  They actually stated that the first major acoustic event, that

they were able to hear and record, was the sinking of the Andrea Doria!

Imagine that!”
