This week, I received two sad e-mails regarding the passing of two gentlemen connected to the Andrea Doria. This post is about one of them: notable architect Der Scutt. The next blog will be dedicated to a rescuer and friend of the greatest sea rescue.
It was on July 23, 2006 that I met a very tall, distinguished looking gentleman. The occasion was the 50th anniversary survivors’ reunion on the campus of the US Merchant Marine Academy on Long Island. I was introduced to Der Scutt and was told that he was a board member of the South Street Seaport Museum. He was going to be accepting one of the two bronze medallions sculpted by Daniel Oberti, who had been commissioned by the survivors of the Andrea Doria. The other medallion, also a tribute to the valor and courage displayed during the tragic event, would be accepted by Italian Consul General of New York, Mr. Bandini.
Not until recently, did I discover a more complete biography of Der Scutt. Fellow survivor, Jerome Reinert sent me a link to Wikipedia, which I read with fascination. I wish I would have known all of this three and a half years ago; I would have congratulated Mr. Scutt for his contribution to New York City’s architecture, and for his unique collection of nautical memorabilia. Nevertheless, I am grateful that the beautiful bronze medallion was placed in the hands of a great man.

Saved by the Ile de France!

55 years ago to this day  my grandparents and I were rescued from  the jaws of the Atlantic!  As the  Andrea Doria  was inclined to reach the bottom of the sea 45 miles south of Nantucket Island, the French liner Ile-de-France carrying nearly 2000 passengers  became our  salvation.  It sent lifeboats to  a dangerous scene where  1706 Andrea Doria passengers were  attempting to disembark.  The young men who rode the life boats back and forth showed  courage and competence.  No one was lost in their hands.

But I can only describe it as ” the ride from hell!”.  Besides my grandparents and me, there were dozens of traumatized passengers in the crowded lifeboat.  We were all heaving; the smell  of soured dreams  has left a lasting impression.   It took us about 45 minutes to reach the Ile–only to find out we had to rescue ourselves by climbing a steep rope ladder along with the  towering hull.  Some passengers were  luckier– they were hoisted up in their lifeboats.

After climbing what seemed to be a skyscraper over the ocean,  we reached a window at the very top of the Ile-de-France.  Survivors were greeted with “Bon soir!”  It was a good evening indeed  knowing that we would be transported to New York.   Pressed along the guard rail,  many Andrea Doria and  Ile-de-France passengers  watched in horror  the sinking of the  crown jewel of the Italian line.  Those of us too weary and tired to gawk,  lay on deck chairs where we were offered coffee and croissants,  among other French specialties.

Doing author business in Italy

Where can an author and speaker enjoy family, friends,fun, beauty,  and delectable dining— and a little work?  In Italy, of course!  I  was asked to do a presentation in the “Canavese”, the area where I was born, and is nestled at the foot of the Alps.  It was one of the most emotional events of my career.  My “paisanos” reacted with warmth, gratitude, and tears.  They were especially appreciative that I had vindicated the Italian captain,  crew,  and ship builders of the Andrea Doria in my book  Alive on the Andrea Doria.

I was also invited to return “home” and partake in a ceremony celebrating Italy’s unification 150 years ago.   Surprisingly, I was received as the guest of honor as several hundred “piemontesi” (people from the Piedmont) reunited in  honor of their roots.  They arrived from Argentina, Brazil, France, and Austria—where  they had immigrated.  The immigration Museum who sponsored the event included me in their history tome.   Once again, I was very touched!

On the Italian Riviera,  I met with the president and curator of the Museum of the Sea in Genoa.  We discussed the possibility of having an Andrea Doria artifacts exhibit in the future—an idea which was met with enthusiasm. The Tragedies of Three Ships

The SS Arandora Star – July 2 1940

On the morning of July 2 1940, the Blue Star Line’s SS Arandora Star was transporting some 1200 German and Italian internees and prisoners of war from Britain to internment camps in St. John’s, Newfoundland, having left Liverpool the day before.  She also carried some 375 military guards and crewmen.  She was torpedoed by the German submarine U-47 off the northwest coast of Ireland and sunk 35 minutes later.  Of the nearly 1600 souls on board, fewer than 600 survived… a loss of some 1000 lives.

The SS Eastland – July 24 1915

On the morning of July 24 1915, the SS Eastland was preparing to depart from Chicago on a pleasure cruise.  Her passengers were employees of Western Electric and their families who were going to a company picnic in Michigan City Indiana.  The Eastland, designed and built to operate in shallow waters, had no keel and was inherently top-heavy.  Prior to that day her instability had been documented in other incidents.  That morning, when many of the passengers were gathered on her top deck, she rolled over on her port side and capsized in 20 feet of water with no warning while moored to her berth.  It was a cool and misty morning and many other passengers who had gone inside to stay warm were trapped below decks in her hull.  Some drowned, and others were crushed by the tumbling of heavy furnishings, including a piano.  The ship was loaded to capacity with over 2700 passengers; 844 passengers, many of them young women and children, and four crew members lost their lives that day.

The SS Andrea Doria – July 26 1956

Late in the evening of July 25 1956, the Italian Line’s SS Andrea Doria and the Swedish American Line’s MS Stockholm collided of the coast of Nantucket.  The Andrea Doria, carrying over 1700 passengers and crew, was westbound into New York after several days at sea.  The Stockholm had left New York that morning and was headed east on the way to Scandinavia.  Although the Andrea Doria was in heavy fog, the Stockholm’s mate reported no fog so it may be that the collision occurred at the edge of a fog bank. The Stockholm, moving at about 18 knots, struck the Andrea Doria on the starboard side just under the bridge wing, penetrating an estimated 40 feet, nearly to the centerline of the ship.  The Andrea Doria immediately heeled over on her starboard side and her watertight compartments were soon compromised when the seawater began to run over the bulkheads.  An SOS was sent quickly and several ships came to the rescue.  Most of the Andrea Doria’s more than 1100 passengers were saved in what has been called the greatest sea rescue in history, but tragically, 51 people died.  Most of those were Andrea Doria passengers who were killed on or as a result of the impact, as were five Stockholm crewmen who were in their cabins in the bow of their ship.  Although the Andrea Doria remained afloat for eleven hours, she continued to take on water and list, gradually rolling over onto her starboard side.  Sadly, she slipped below the surface shortly after 10:00 a.m. on the morning of July 26.

Statistics on the Andrea Doria and Stockholm Collision

On June 16th, 1951, the Andrea Doria was launched at the Ansaldo shipyard in Italy. She cost 29 million dollars, and had very advanced safety features. She had watertight compartments, a double bottom, and a double hull. As were the Titanic and Lusitania, she was labeled by some as unsinkable.

She had 16 lifeboats onboard, with a capacity of over 2,000 people. Two of the boats had motors and radios.

On july 17th, 1956, she left Italy on her 101st crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. It would be her last.

Stockholm, the Ship that Sank Andrea DoriaOn July 25th, 1956, the Andrea Doria and the Sweedish American Line ship Stockholm were both steaming near New York City.
The Andrea Doria was surrounded by a fog bank. When radar showed another ship (the Stockholm) nearby, she continued on her course. At 11:10 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the Stockholm‘s bow ripped into the side of the Andrea Doria.

On the left is the Stockholm after the collision. Her bow is smashed in, but she remained afloat. Only 5 of the Stockholm‘s crew were killed in the collision.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend the 11:30 a.m.ceremony that takes place in the Ackerman Auditorium, 300 Steamboat Rd.

The Postal Service says that since the founding of the republic, the United States has looked to the commercial maritime industry for much of its growth and security. This issuance pays tribute to the U.S. Merchant Marine, the modern name for the maritime fleet that has played this vital role. The four-stamp design on this pane features types of vessels that have formed an important part of this history: clipper ships, auxiliary steamships, Liberty ships, and containerships.
Clipper Ships
The clipper ship, notes maritime historian Benjamin Labaree, was “a unique American contribution to the glory of seafaring.” Hundreds of “Yankee” clippers, noted for their streamlined shape and majestic cloud of square-rigged sails, were built from the 1840s through the 1850s. Their heyday arrived with the California Gold Rush of 1849, which hastened the need for faster sailing ships to take prospectors and supplies out West. In 1851, the fastest of the clipper ships, the Flying Cloud, sailed the 13,000-plus miles from New York around Cape Horn to San Francisco in a record eighty-nine days. Clippers also boosted the trade in tea, bringing it fresh from China to England and America. Clipper ships eventually lost their dominance to the more dependable steamship, which had greater cargo capacity and could sail on regular schedules. But during the time they “flashed their splendor around the world,” as Samuel Eliot Morison has written, clippers embodied the poetry of the seas.
Auxiliary Steamships
In the mid-nineteenth century, steam-powered ships competed with clipper and other sailing ships for transatlantic mail and passenger service. In America the most magnificent of these were the four large wooden-hulled, sidewheel steamships—the Atlantic, Baltic, Pacific, and Arctic—that were built by New York entrepreneur Edward K. Collins in the 1840s. Like many steamships of the time, they included back-up or auxiliary sailing rigs to supplement their powerful engines. The elegant, 280-foot ships of the “Collins Line”—the ocean liners of their day—were notable for both speed and cargo-carrying capacity. They provided service between New York and Liverpool in the 1850s and set numerous transatlantic speed records before rising costs helped bring an end to their business.
Liberty Ships
During World War I, the United States learned how to mass-produce merchant ships. But the nation remained without a settled policy for maintaining a modern merchant marine to meet its economic and defense needs until 1936, when legislation established the U.S. Maritime Commission and empowered the “U.S. Merchant Marine” to serve as a naval auxiliary unit. The Commission immediately began increasing the size of the country’s merchant fleet and shortly before America’s entry into World War II ordered the production of plain but sturdy cargo vessels called Liberty ships. Over the next four years, the United States produced more than 2,700 Liberty ships–“the most impressive single page in the history of the American shipbuilding industry,” according to historian Allan Nevins. They served in all theaters of war and sustained the Allied forces with a steady supply of food and war material. These ships were manned by members of the U.S. Merchant Marine, whose sacrifices, though less heralded than those of U.S. Navy crewmen, were no less critical to the war effort.
Containerships
Without the containership the global economy as we know it would be impossible. These ships, each loaded with thousands of containers measuring either 20 or 40 feet in length, carry virtually all the products and materials that end up in our local stores. “In 2006 alone,” according to a maritime history exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution, “about 18 million containers stuffed with cargoes of all sorts were sent on more than 200 million trips by sea, rail, and road to places around the world.” Containerships were pioneered in the 1950s by Malcom McLean, a trucking operator from North Carolina.
