Relatives of Titanic officer seek return of letter

LONDON (AP) — The descendants of a surgeon who died on the Titanic nearly 100 years ago are appealing for a benefactor to purchase a soon-to-be-auctioned letter he wrote from the doomed ship — and to return it to the city where the vessel was built.

The surgeon, who treated second- and third-class passengers, signed off: “With fondest love, John.”

Martin said his family had held onto the letter for generations, but that Simpson’s 81-year-old daughter-in-law gave it to a Titanic enthusiast in Holland 15 years ago. The family lost track of the letter until learning it is to be auctioned by Philip Weiss Auctions.

Simpson’s story will form part of a new Titanic Belfast visitor attraction opening in Belfast next month ahead of the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

Martin said the letter provided a rare insight into the life of one of the ship’s officers.

“There are references within the letter which give a bit of humanity to the man who died, and he did die bravely,” he said. “It puts a human face on what could be another statistic.”

An account of the last moments of the Titanic written by 2nd officer Charles Lightoller, who survived the disaster, is going on sale in the same auction.

In his letter, Lightoller describes Simpson walking calmly along the deck with other officers as the ship sank. Lightoller wrote: “They were perfectly calm in the knowledge they had done their duty,”

He continued: “We exchanged the words, ‘Goodbye, old man.’ This occurred shortly before the end and I am not aware that he was seen by anyone after.”

Lightoller’s letter is expected to fetch $20,000 at the same auction on March 2.

Why lifeboats needed redesigning!

A few weeks ago  I spoke with my friend Bill Garzke, chairman of  the national Marine forensics committee for the Society of Naval architects and Marine engineers.  The topic was the Costa Concordia. Bill said, ” we need to rethink the concept of lifeboats.”  I couldn’t have agreed more since lifeboats (and  the lack of)  were one of the largest issues  in  evacuating  the Andrea Doria. Bill  added that lifeboats have remained the same in the last 100 years.

After reading the article below,  one can  easily enumerate several reasons– mostly technical– why lifeboats as they  presently are designed are a  threat to survival.  Interestingly,  one of the characters in my new novel, I Was Shipwrecked on the Andrea Doria!  the Titanic of the 1950s is proposing  a new concept for ship evacuation.

Sameer Sharma shrugged off his superstitious mother’s concerns when, to celebrate his fifth wedding anniversary, he booked a Mediterranean cruise that began on Friday the 13th.

The inauspicious departure date was the only one available, said Sharma, 30, of Stoneham.

Just hours into their voyage onboard the Costa Concordia, Sharma and his wife, Divya, 26, found themselves dangling in a too-full lifeboat that crew members struggled to lower into the water below, the massive ship leaning over them as it slipped further into the sea.

“We felt this was the end of our life,’’ said Sharma, who is a co-owner of Grapevine Travelers wine and spirits shop in Medford.

Sharma told his wife, “Get ready to jump if we have to.’’

The Sharmas are one of four Massachusetts families recovering from a harrowing experience aboard the luxury cruise ship that ran aground, then tipped on its side off the coast of western Italy Friday.

Newlyweds Shawn and Megan Blomgren Burgess of Marlborough were expected to arrive at Logan Airport at 8 last night after a long journey home, Shawn’s younger brother, Nathan, said by phone from his home in Paxton.

Blomgren Burgess, who works at Skinner auction house, called family members Friday night, before the ship’s accident made it into US news reports, to assure them that they had made it to shore, Nathan Burgess said.

The couple, who married on New Year’s Eve, boarded the ship on Jan. 9.

Shawn Burgess, a technical analyst at EBSCO Publishing, told his family that it took about two hours from the point of impact to the time that they stepped into lifeboats with “no direction’’ from crew members, his brother said.

Once the Burgesses were in a lifeboat, the ship tilted further into the water, pinning the side of the lifeboat.

“They thought’’ the ship “was going to fall on top of them,’’ Nathan Burgess said.

Crew members pushed the lifeboat free, he said. The couple, who had their wallets with them but little more, boarded a ferry for the mainland and took a bus to Rome, where they stayed at an airport hotel before their scheduled flight home yesterday, he said.

“They were exhausted,’’ Nathan Burgess said.

Three siblings, Amanda, Adrian, and Brandon Warrick of Braintree, as well as Benji Smith and Emily Lau, newlyweds from Cambridge, previously interviewed by the Globe, also made it safely off the boat.

As scrutiny grew yesterday of Costa Cruises, captain Francesco Schettino, and parent company Carnival Corp. the US Embassy in Rome reported on its Facebook page that 120 Americans were among the estimated 4,200 people who had been aboard.

In the dining room, Sharma said, they ordered a beer and a glass of champagne and began chatting with a honeymooning couple from Argentina when they heard a loud noise and noticed that the gentle movements of the ship had stopped.

Then came the crash of plates and glasses as the ship tilted slightly. Back-up lights came on as the power was cut.

The crew repeatedly told the passengers to stay calm, that they were experiencing electrical problems, Sharma said.

But his concern grew as the ship began leaning more sharply.

The couple returned to their room several floors up, still with no direction from the crew, Sharma said, and they realized that other passengers were already gathering with their life jackets. Their panic grew.

They grabbed life vests, along with their wallets and phones, and returned to an emergency gathering place on the fourth floor, where they could hear noises that sounded like something breaking in the hull, he said.

Sharma said he and his wife took a photo of themselves, believing it might be the last one taken of them.

When they saw their own scared, blank faces, they did it again, this time forcing a smile.

The Greatest Sea Rescue in History” (Morgan James Publishing, 2008). Even before the Concordia disaster, Ms. Simpson was working on a new book: “I Was Shipwrecked on the Andrea Doria! The Titanic of the 1950s.” “It’s a novel,” she said, and one of the characters is a 9-year-old girl.

 

 

Pierette Domenica Simpson recognized herself in film footage from the Ile de France, which rescued passengers from the Andrea Doria after it was hit by the Stockholm in the Atlantic in July 1956.

Ms. Simpson’s story was that she was rescued by the S.S. Ile de France, which sped to the scene and picked up more than 750 Andrea Doria passengers.

The Andrea Doria was on the next to the last day of a 10-day trip from Genoa, Italy, when it was hit. When it sank, nearly 11 hours later, a plane carrying a CBS News camera crew circled overhead. The correspondent Douglas Edwards, his nose against the window, described the Andrea Doria as “looking like a colorful but big and dead hippopotamus.”

The collision resulted in 51 deaths, 46 from the Andrea Doria and 5 from the Stockholm. Among the casualties on the Andrea Doria was Camille M. Cianfarra, a longtime foreign correspondent for The New York Times who was based in Madrid at the time. He was apparently thrown across his cabin, which was close to the Stockholm’s point of impact.

“When I hear the passengers from the Concordia talking about how they injured their legs just to crawl upward and get out,” Ms. Simpson said, “that’s what I found from interviewing my fellow survivors on the Andrea Doria and recalling what we had to do to get outside.”

“What seems to be different is we had an announcement shortly after the collision,” she said. “The captain ordered Officer Badano,” the second officer, “to make an announcement in English and Italian. It was such a staticky connection. We could only hear words like ‘calm’ and ‘life jackets.’ There was so much hysteria, we couldn’t really hear.”

Another difference, she said, was that the captain on the Andrea Doria sent out an S.O.S. almost immediately. “He ordered the lowering of the lifeboats,” she said, but the Andrea Doria was listing so badly that the lifeboats on the port side could not go down. Some passengers on the Concordia have described scenes of panic and confusion in their efforts to evacuate.

“The ones on the right side, they were out 20-some feet from the ship, so we could not board them,” she said. “They had to be dropped in the ocean, and we had to make our own way down there.”

It appears that  the topic of safety (or lack of) on our seas  has resurfaced and is the buzz  in the media,  online,  and at social gatherings.  For me,  it has become a  renewed mission.  I am following closely details surrounding the shipwreck off the  coast of Italy,  and plan to address it at all my speaking venues.  I have the great fortune  of processing the event with  the top maritime societies in the U.S. In fact,  in 2011,  I became a member of the national marine forensics committee of the  Society of Naval architects and Marine engineers.  They have invited me to speak at the Inaugural Marine Forensics Symposium in Washington DC in April.  Film producer James Cameron is one of our featured speakers.

I have also been invited to release my new book at the symposium.   It is a young adult novel  called I Was Shipwrecked on the Andrea Doria!  The Titanic of the 1950s (cover attached). As if destiny had a hand in it,  the last paragraph of the book (completed in December),  states that I am seeking to inspire a new generation of marine scientists to enhance safety on our seas.  It all seems so serendipitous!

The media  has given me very generous opportunities to express my experience of surviving the Andrea Doria shipwreck and what the Costa  Concordia means to me.  It appears that being an author/authority of my own shipwreck gives me the “go-to-expert” designation. This topic can be either presented alone or with John Moyer, diver/salver/collector extraordinaire of the Andrea Doria.  Moyer has recovered some of the most precious artwork from thewreck: gigantic ceramic wall panels, statues, etc. He even owns part of theAdmiral Andrea Doria statue. We have discussed this and think that a survivor/author and diver/salver/collector would create a most dynamic and unique combination.

Other Topics on which I can elaborate: grand parenting, an author?s journey, ethnic bias, correcting history, immigration,  the role of the clergy and women  in survival,  and more.
